Leather Care Guide

Real leather lasts for years and gets better with age when it's looked after. A few minutes every few months is all it takes.

Everyday care

  • Wipe with a soft, dry cloth to remove dust.
  • For a mark, use a cloth that's barely damp, then let it air dry.
  • Keep pens, keys and sharp objects in a separate pocket.

If it gets wet

  • Blot the water with a soft cloth. Don't rub.
  • Let it dry naturally at room temperature, away from heaters, hair dryers and direct sun.
  • Stuff bags with paper while they dry so they keep their shape.

Condition it

  • Every 3 to 6 months, or when the leather feels dry, rub in a small amount of leather conditioner with a soft cloth.
  • Test on a hidden spot first.
  • Pebbled leather needs less conditioning than smooth or distressed leather.

Avoid

  • Alcohol, household cleaners, baby wipes and oils not made for leather.
  • Long hours in direct sunlight, which fades colour.
  • Rubbing dark or vintage-dyed leather against light clothing while it's new, as some colour can transfer.

Storing it

  • Keep it in a breathable cotton bag, never plastic. Leather needs air.
  • Stuff bags with paper and stand them upright. Don't hang them by the straps for long periods.
  • Store in a cool, dry place.

Distressed and vintage leather

  • Marks, creases and colour changes are part of its character. Light scuffs often fade if you rub them gently with a clean fingertip.

Hardware

  • Wipe zips, buckles and clasps with a dry cloth.
